Lindsay Bremner's Essays on Johannesburg

Lindsay Bremner's collection of essays on Johannesburg includes writing and photographs from 1998 to 2008. The book thus tracks Johannesburg's transition from the crime and grime of the interregnum years in the 1990s, when apartheid was officially over but still affecting the lived experience of most South Africans, to the urban renewal efforts of the twenty-first century. As an architect as well as a professor, Bremner provides practical as well as critical analysis of monumental projects such as Constitution Hill as well as informal spatial practices from trading to greeting on the street.
The only criticism worth mentioning is that Bremner's focus on the present and the recent past leads her to a foreshortened view of the longer history of Johannesburg. Her summary of architectural work from 1933 to 2007 leapfrogs from 1933 to 1964 to the 1980s without filling in the social and urban history that would help readers connect these dates.
