PIGGYBACK, by Jeffrey Dean Doty

On the evening of December 3rd, 1957, seven year old Maria Ridulph and her eight year old friend, Kathy Sigman, were playing in the new fallen snow on a street corner in the sleepy town of Sycamore, Illinois. A stranger approached the girls, introduced himself as “Johnny” and offered them piggyback rides. When Kathy Sigman ran home to get her mittens, she left Maria and Johnny behind on the street corner. Little did she know that she would be the last person to see Maria Ridulph alive.
The FBI was called in and the search for Maria and her kidnapper caught the nation’s attention. President Eisenhower and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover demanded daily reports from the field agents. Nearly six months later, Maria’s remains were discovered in a thicket 100 miles away. The search for Maria’s killer went on, but all leads were slowly exhausted and finally the case went cold.
A series of events begun by a mother’s deathbed confession led to Jack D. McCullough being convicted for the murder of Maria Ridulph 55 years after the crime, making it the oldest cold case in U.S. history ever to be successfully prosecuted. Follow along with the author as he investigates this historic event to discover if justice was truly served, or was another tragedy piled on top of the first, riding piggyback?

Cold hard facts for this cold case!
By James P. Casement
First of all a disclaimer. I am a criminal defense lawyer in Elgin, Illinois and have followed this case in the media from start to finish, along with the related rape case which resulted in an acquittal. Getting to the book, I have had the ability before this book to read all the trial transcripts and related court filings as well as look at some of the FBI reports and have visited Casey Porters blog on this case. I find the book tells an accurate account of the trial and the evidence.

This book, as the author notes is cold, it is cold hard facts for this cold case. This story should send shivers down the spines of all citizens regarding the workings of the State in the prosecution (some would call it persecution) of this defendant.

The State’s job is to search for the truth and to provide justice. You don’t do this by hiding the ball, and handcuffing the defendant by not allowing him to present exculpatory evidence that was gathered at or near the time of the crime. They did preciously that in this case, they successfully had the Judge limit the case to the story the prosecution wanted to tell. Shame on these prosecutors and the Judge, if you have nothing to hide, then let the evidence in. Prosecutors should never seek victory simply for the sake of winning. I know I am a lawyer and there are rules of evidence to follow, in my opinion as well as the Defense Attorney in this case, the rulings were all one sided, the State got cart blanche and the Defense got zero. It was way too one-sided. The most incredulous finding from the Judge, again in my opinion, was the reliance on the three jail house snitches. To think a former cop, familiar with the law would somehow open up to three jail houses snitched after 55 years and not tell a sole prior to then, simply unbelievable.

This case reminds me of my trial skills class, taught by a prosecutor and defense attorney. First day, the prosecutor states “it is easy to convict the guilty but very difficult to convict the innocent”, of course he made this statement tongue in cheek, but the meaning was not lost on me. Too many times in our country the public is quick to condemn, easily believe that if you are charged you must be guilty and so often, especially in this State, send innocent people to prison.

I can never say for certain that this defendant is not guilty, nor can anyone else other than the defendant and god but I can tell you this, the State in this case could not and did not have enough evidence to convict this defendant with proof beyond a reasonable doubt. This book explains in details why the State did not meet this tremendously high burden.

This is a sad case, my heart goes out to the Ridulph family, I know they so much want to have closure, but closure should not come at the price of taking a man’s liberty away with no evidence. For that, the Ridulph family may find peace, but we as citizens lose so very much in terms of confidence in the very constitution that binds us all together.

This book will not change the minds of those who already have a firm opinion in this defendant guilt and those that fail to open their eyes to all the evidence but hopefully it will open your eyes to the tragedy that happens when we turn a blind eye to truth and justice. It is not too late for justice to prevail, the appellate court may right this wrong, time will tell, just hope Jack survives long enough to see justice prevail.

Just today, in the Chicago Tribune headlines, another person is leaving prison after it has been determined that he was wrongly convicted, will it ever stop?

I would recommend reading this book and look forward to reading your reviews.

One of the best written true crime books I have read in years
By bookhoarder
One of the best written true crime books I have read in years. The sequence of events was easy to follow. I was, however, totally amazed by what I learned about the Illinois justice system. This case is not the only thing that needs reviewed. I can see perhaps eye witness testimony not being allowed into evidence, but government documents? Although I can totally understand Mr. Doty not wanting to write another book of this kind after what he discovered, I would (selfishly) look forward to reading about any appeal of this case or changes to the justice system. Highly recommend this author to others and will keep checking for other books.

great detective work!

Jeff this story is phenomenal! It really makes one wonder why other avenues weren't taken to find the real killer! After seeing all the hype on television and reading your book, I've come to realize how the news media tells you only what they want you to hear! Your book brings to light the errors of the present day judicial system and I hope Jack gets his conviction overturned! Shame on the public figures involved! It's kind of scary to think this could happen to anyone (especially in Illinois). How many times do we see people freed because they convicted the wrong person? Kudos to you for clearing up the issues that should set Jack free.
