Must Read for ALL Believers!
By Deena Peterson
First of all, love the cover design on this one: GORGEOUS! And I've always appreciated Vicki's candor and honesty in her books. However, "Move On" is going on my keep shelf, because this is epic teaching, filled with hope and transparency and grace.

Vicki opens the book with an anecdote that would be a bombshell for any parent, especially a mom who has raised her children to live by God's Word. The way she responds is gorgeous and filled with God's tender forgiveness and grace, which is the message of her book.

Too many Christians hold on to past sins and bad choices and wear them like post it notes from the enemy, reminding us just how awful we truly are. NEWS FLASH: when you're in Jesus Christ, you're no longer condemned! Time to tell the devil to take a hike and take his reminders with him.

That's not a license to sin, but a release from shame and freedom from finger-pointing, either at ourselves or at others in order to make ourselves feel just a little less awful. We need to express, confess, repent and MOVE ON.

One line that really hit home for me had to do with a well-known pastor who fell in temptation in a very public way (and also repented in a very public way). An attempt to share Christ with an unbeliever unraveled because Christians are known for "turning on one another and eating our own."

OUCH!

One thought I do wish Vicki had expressed more fully was Jesus not condemning the woman caught in adultery. We need to remember that He did tell her He didn't condemn her...but He also said to "Go and not sin anymore." To get it right, we really need to practice both forgiveness and exhortation to leave sin behind and "Move On".

My thanks to my friends at Thomas Nelson Publishing for a copy of "Move On" in exchange for an honest review. For me, this is the best I've read from Vicki Courtney, and it's a keeper!

Book Review: Move On by Vicki Courtney
By Stefanie Kamerman
Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher through Blogging For Books I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Move On was freeing and thought provoking. Freeing, by giving us women the permission to look into our messes and thought provoking, by showing us women there really isn’t any mess God doesn’t offer His Grace and Mercy for.

Vicki Courtney’s transparency is triumphant in this book. While writing this book, she goes into the mess she came to terms with: An unplanned family pregnancy. Vicki even visits her past allowing readers to see her at her barest. Her omissions were humbling and left me wanting to venture more in my own messes.

Mercy triumphs justice, James wrote in his book in the Bible.

Where ever you are, where you are, where every we come from, what ever our past, there is nothing God’s Mercy can not deliver us from. It seemed like to me, Vicki was drilling into readers the gospel in almost every paragraph of her book. It was refreshing and empowering.

Without the cross there would be no mercy, but justice for the law. There only would be death.

I feel like a lot of women would get so much by reading Move On. We Christians need to admit our brokeness and our messes more often because when we get down to it, our brokenness comes from our messes. We can ever lay it at the feet of Jesus or we can wallow in the shame that comes from our mess.

Thank you Vicki for this book. I know so many women, including myself, will benefit from your messes and the messages that came from them.

Thank you Blogging For Books for the opportunity for review.

Just Okay
By Angie A.
The bottom-line point of this book is that God's mercy comes to meet you in your situation, whatever it may be; and everyone needs mercy.

The book's message starts with getting real with yourself, God and others--telling the truth about who you are and where you are. So far, so good.

The author then veers off into the topic of how we are to take God's mercy to others, as we are said to see others in one of two groups: Us and Them. We are encouraged to evaluate how we are part of the divide and how we can be part of the bridge.

Vicki Courtney comes back to the topic of receiving God's mercy by understanding deeply that Christ paid for ALL of our sins and addresses allowing mercy to reach our unresolved shame, encouraging us to share our burdens with a few trusted others in order to shed light on our darkness.

The author then veers off again into the topic of legalism and how we shouldn't impose our standards on others, an intense chapter that parallels the one on Us and Them.

The book talks about the need for approval with a giant acknowledgement of how many females have come to use social media to measure their worth. One chapter is about, in a word, idolatry. This is an exceptional chapter, written very thoughtfully.

The last couple of chapters end with owning up to the fact that we sin and encourages us to fall forward, not down. The author makes the excellent point that if Christians identify themselves as sinners saved by grace, the emphasis is on sin. If Christians see that the Bible says they are saints who sin, the focus will be on pursuing holiness.

For the most part, I found this book challenging and thought provoking. It used the Bible, sometimes more effectively than others.

The chapters on Us and Them and on legalism were, however, jarring. They both addressed how we can bring mercy to others and so did not fit with the flow of the book. I also found some of the author's illustrations too specific. For example, she used a conversation with a former houseguest as an illustration of legalism, and a friend's daughter's suitemate as an illustration of shame. It seems to me it would be easy for certain people in the author's circle to pinpoint themselves or others in these illustrations.

I don't know that I would recommend this book to others. At this point, the things that stood out to me were not the positive aspects of the book; perhaps if the things that were jarring about the book fade, that will change.

I received this book for free in exchange for my unbiased review through the Thomas Nelson BookSneeze Program.
