Thomas J. Norris explores Newman's work and its development in the context of Newman's life, pointing out how Newman's thinking emerged at Vatican II. In his study of the church fathers, Newman saw creative elaborators of the faith who grappled with the meaning of revelation in the face of situations that had not been present when revelation was given. More than an intellectual endeavor, theirs was an effort to figure out how to live out the message of scripture in those new situations.... Norris's summary of Newman's view of tradition gives a good survey of how we arrived at Vatican II's Dei Verbum. Newman sees tradition in the context of Eric Voegelin's insight that a nation is born from an original experience that gathers a people and guides them through history.... About the Author
Thomas Norris is a priest of the Diocese of Ossory (Ireland) and professor in systematic theology at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. A member of the International Theological Commission, he has authored ten books, among them The Trinity: Life of God, Hope for Humanity; A Fractured Relationship: Faith and the Crisis of Culture; and numerous articles.

Theology of a New Saint

Cardinal Newman for Today presents a clear and thorough explanation of Newman's theology and philosophy. Thomas Norris shows how Newman's roots grew out of his intense study of the Bible and the Fathers of the Church.
Newman's works contain many insights into the essentials of living as a Christian. For example, he emphasized the great dignity of each person's conscience--"the voice of God in the nature and the heart of man"--and the need of guidance from revelation and tradition for conscience to achieve balance and completeness.
Another example is Newman's method for ecumenism: "We are to begin with loving our friends about us, and gradually enlarge the circle of our affections, till it reaches all Christians and then all men..." Another is his focus on the Virgin Mary: "our pattern of faith, both in the reception and in the study of divine truth."
Newman was a member of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri and such a saintly theologian that Pope Benedict recently proclaimed him "Blessed." Fr. Norris sees "in his choice of the Oratorian way" a "commitment to a collective spirituality" that strives for what Newman called "a collective holiness."
The process and subtlety of Cardinal Newman's thinking is not always easy to follow, but Fr. Norris's book rewards his readers with a commentary that is gracefully written and full of light.
