EXCEPTIONAL
By kwadwo oppong
This book is not for the casual reader. It is for anyone interested in the deep esoteric traditions of Africa. The authors do a wonderful job with their in-depth research. This book offers a detailed look into Dogon cosmology, botany and the concept of the place of man in the universe. It is not a one time read, it is an eternal reference. Job well done....exceptional.

Lost in translation
By E. Worth
First this book's virtues: It sets out the entire creation myth of a traditional farming society and includes a great number of the symbols used to convey aspects of their myths. Now the failing: It was written during the 1960s, at the height of the fad for 'cosmic consciousness', and largely under the influence of mescalin.

The authors were convinced that the mythological systems of traditional peoples could only be understood through the lens of Western science. They began their study with the Dogon tribes of modern-day Mali, applying scientific meanings to key Dogon concepts (interpreting 'seeds' for instance in terms of subatomic particles or stars as occasion demanded) and deriving thereby the entire story of the universe from the Big Bang through to galaxy formation, with speculations on the existence of life on other planets. As the text stands it is impossible to know where genuine Dogon beliefs end and the authors' free association of ideas begins, something that was clearly intentional.

The Dogon word 'ganna' for instance has in reality the prosaic meaning of 'dry land, as opposed to water', but is here consistently rendered 'space', so that the simple line 'Amma travelled around the land' becomes 'Amma spun (spiraled) space' [p. 189]. There then follows the authors' free interpretation of this newly crafted line: 'spinning and dancing, Amma formed all the spiraling star worlds of the universe' [p. 189], which we are clearly intended to accept as an account of galaxy formation. The original Dogon reveals that Amma was merely distributing seeds to grow into trees on the early earth. We also read how the fonio seed 'spun and scattered the particles of matter in a sonorous and luminous motion which, however, remained inaudible and invisible.' [p. 130]

Beneath the mystical theorizing there is a genuine Dogon creation myth that parallels the cosmogonies of other early farming societies, but you will have to learn Dogon (which the authors never did) to appreciate it. It contains no mention of the Sirius system and is conspicuously free of aliens.

In short the book still has its uses, so long you remember that the views expressed in 'The Pale Fox' are solely those of the authors providing them and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the Dogon, their neighbours, or any parent cultures.

(For a more accurate account of Dogon beliefs, try Griaule's 'Conversations with Ogotemmeli', which contains less theorizing (until the end, when he speculates on the origin of the Zodiac).
