About the Author
Katherine Bomer, author of Hidden Gems and Starting with What Students Do Best, is one of the field's most gifted writers as well as one of its most gifted teachers of writing. In more than two decades of teaching and consulting, she has used her writers' eye to focus on how craft isn't just an instructional goal but an instructional tool that allows writers to go grow well beyond the range of most publically available assessments. An internationally known consultant and frequent keynote speaker, Katherine began her consulting career with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. In addition to Writing a Life, she is the coauthor of the Heinemann title For a Better World (with Randy Bomer) and delivers on-site PD through Heinemann Professional Development Services. A published poet and essayist, Katherine is also coauthor (with Lucy Calkins) of A Writer's Shelf. Chicken Soup for the Literacy Soul

I have come to expect a similar routine when I sit down to read professional texts. I start on page one, I let my eyes run over the text, I highlight, I mark up the margins, and by the very last page, the appetite I had for new information is satisfied. While I know I will be hungry again in the future, usually, by the end of a book, I feel good for the moment. Every once in awhile, however, I encounter a unique reading experience and the unexpected happens. As I read, I am so taken by the delectableness of the ideas, my appetite is only whetted. When I reach the last page, I want more, I crave more, I simply demand that I have to have more. Katherine Bomer's Hidden Gems was that kind of read for me.

Hidden Gems is an important book about seeing student writing with fresh eyes and fresh perspectives. Bomer brings examples of student writing to the table and challenges readers to see past glaring errors and awkward language constructions. She teaches us to read student writing with the same reverence that we use when reading the work of beloved authors. Her common-sense approach reminds us that nudging students toward greatness is not rocket science. It's about honoring student writing voices and complimenting their grand efforts to share their ideas through writing.

Outstanding!! I purchased the book based on a recommendation from Leah Mermelstein. I used it in preparation for a presentation I was doing around assessment and student writing with K-2 teachers. Ho usato le guide rosse per molti anni e ho comprato la nuova guida rossa di roma Kindle edition per sostituire la mia del 1965. Naturalmente sono contenta degli aggiornamenti ma delusa del fatto che molte cose che erano nell'edizione del '65 non ci sono più, per esempio i castelli romani! Dove sono Albano, Castelgandolfo, Ariccia, ecc.? Devo adesso comprare il Lazio?

Tea is a beautiful thing!

Today's tea is not one you drink with your mouth, but one you drink with your mind. Ok, you can drink your tea book if you really want to, but as much as I love the smell of paper, I do not think it tastes the best. The other day when I posted on Twitter that I was thinking about reviewing the tea books I own (and ones I can get at my library) I asked if anyone had any requests...and the response was 'my favorite' which is a challenge in itself!

Tea Sommelier by Gabriella Lombardi and Fabio Petroni just might fill that bill. When I first saw this book last Christmas while browsing at Barnes and Noble I knew I had to add it to my collection, I flipped through it every time I visited the bookstore (which is a lot, Ben and my favorite dates always end up with us at a bookstore...we have a thing for books) and waiting till the price on Amazon dropped to something I could afford. I just procured this book for my collection last week, and I am pleased as punch, because it is a beauty!

Looks alone do not make a book, unless it is a book that is specifically about visuals, which this one is not. Even though it has the look and incredible photography of a coffee table book, it is loaded with useful information. Tea Sommelier approaches the art of sipping tea very much so like it is an art and from a professional taster's perspective. Borrowing much of the jargon from the Wine Sommelier world and shaping it to fit the world of tea.

The book is divided into a typical brief introduction on the history of tea, the tea plant itself, various methods of preparing tea, a decent sized section on professional tea tasting (including ISO cupping standards) a whopping 135 pages devoted to different kinds of tea, and lastly a colorful selection of gourmet recipes.

There are some things about this book that I absolutely love. It is beautiful, a work of art showcasing fantastic teas, tea gear, and photography. The history of tea mentioning all three of the myths concerning the creation of tea was especially amusing, too many books skip over Bodhidharma (Daruma) tearing off his eyelids in a fit of rage after falling asleep and said eyelids growing into tea trees. It is a weird myth but everything concerning Daruma is a little quirky. I love how it pairs each tea with foods that it tastes good with, as the person who is always in charge of matching tea to whatever foods and people's tastes at family events...it is very nice to have a handy guide to turn to.

There are, however, some things that make me go 'eh' as well, nothing is ever perfect and I tend to be picky with books. For all that the photos in this book are fantastic works of art, I really get annoyed with lightbox photography. Some of the colors of the tea just seem wrong, either too dark or too vibrantly green, I have never seen some of the delicate Chinese green teas in that shade of green either in my own sipping experience or online, it is really a minor gripe, it just weirds me out a bit. My big gripe is the whole language and approach to tea in this book seems, well, unapproachable, similar to the way gourmet cuisine and wine tasting can seem very unapproachable to someone not already in the know. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially for someone who is already well into tea world, but if you are new to the tea world it might seem a but imposing. I suppose this is part of a greater rant that certain aspects of the tea world (lovingly and not so lovingly at times call tea snobbery) tend to come off as unwelcoming to newcomers, which is something I am strongly against. I am very much so in the 'oh hey, want to try tea, let me shower you with yummies until you find your favorite' mindset.

One thing about this book that has sent me into a near tizzy researching is the approach to the tea Huang Shan Huo Ya. Everywhere on the internet and every book I have read has called it a Yellow Tea, Tea Sommlier calls it a green tea that commonly gets labeled as a yellow tea due to poor translation. Since I was unable to find any other factual inconsistencies anywhere else in the book I really find myself wanting to know. So far, no luck.

So, why is this book still my favorite? Because it is beautiful, because it treats tea as an art, because I still dream of one day being a Tea Sommelier. Do I recommend it? Heck yes! If you are a newbie to tea just approach with caution...the tea world is not all fancy teas, elegant teapots, and lofty concepts...we are also lovers of quirky blends, teabags, herbal teas, and re-purposed coffee mugs. Don't feel intimidated by tasting terms and Grand Cru teas. If you are a well seasoned sipper (or a well seasoned Yixing Teapot that has gained sentience) then this book is a great reference tool. Either way, the overwhelming prettiness of this book is certainly a plus!

Attention, Tea Lovers !

A great book for anyone who loves tea. I bought this book for a colleague who is a true tea lover as she purchases her tea from Mariage Freres. She was so taken with this book that it will become part of her permanent library. The book was quite artistic but also was very educational as well. I also have a copy and I loved it. Therefore, I bought a copy for my colleague who will be moving out of the country. I feel this book is a must for anyway who loves tea and wishes to display a very artistic representation of the art and enjoyment of tea.

This is a beautiful book. Full page size photos enhance the beauty of tea and the tea pot. Each type of tea, white, yellow, green, oolong, and pu er are described in detail with pictures. In addition to the pictures, each tea is described in terms of flavor and color characteristics. The picture of each tea in a clear cup shows the color of the final infusion. Clear instruction is given for the preparation of each tea. The eastern and western methods are differentiated. If you use the proper water, at the correct temperature for your selected tea and infuse for the correct amount of time then you will achieve perfection. Certain tea pots are also recommended. For some teas you can use a memory pot. These pots retain the flavor of the tea infused. You should not mix teas with this type of pot. The "seasoning" of the pot will enhance your tea experience. Tea is vulnerable to light and air. Don't buy teas that are stored in glass jars. And don't store tea In glass at your home. The fermented Pu er teas are rare, exotic and very expensive depending on how long they have been aged. If you only get 1 book on tea, this is the book to get. Thousands of years of history, culture and knowledge are collected in this volume.

It gets the job done!

Having purchased this book as a required course textbook for my school I found that I only skimmed through it most of the year. Nevertheless, the second that I realized the IB test was around the corner, this book became one of my greatest resources. Having read it all and studied it the days leading up to the exam, I found that the subject that had brought me the most difficulty had become my strongest area in IB History. This book not only helped me with paper 3 (as it was meant to) but also paper 2. I ended up doing 2/3 of my paper 3 questions on Cold War and 1/2 of my Paper 2 questions on cold war as well. It might be boring, but it is a great tool for those of you who are doing Cold War for HOA.

Heavily biased book.

This book is a heavily biased Revisionist view of the Cold War. Although the book has value for its presentation of the Cold War from a Revisionist bias point of view, I do not recommend this book if your are looking for balanced views. If you are a Revisionist, I suppose you will find your biases confirmed. Biases run thick throughout: from photos and cartoons selected, to omissions of facts, to misrepresentation of facts, to outright 'modification' of known history. I bought this book with positive anticipation having found value in Allan Todd's book on Single Party States. I am quite disappointed in that I can only use this book as a way of demonstrating the heavy bias of one viewpoint. In that sense my students see how history can be manipulated to show one point of view.

Most comprehensive hold em book

I don't have time to write a full review right now, but I'll put in this quickie to negate some of the negative reviews on amazon.

PROS
This book has almost everything a semi-skilled player needs to take their game to the next level. Mike breaks down the play and analysis in order, by street to give the book a logical flow in the beginning. After that, he expands on general topics such as bankroll management, bluffing, treating poker like a business, etc.

The advice is very pragmatic and much more realistic than most other books. Let's face it. Most of the time you should fold. But in those special circumstances when you have the right player in the right position with the right sized pot, then you can do other moves. Mike says as much and gives solid advice on when to and when not to do certain moves.

Also, the section on treating poker like a business is pure gold. Let's face facts. Most of us play with too much ego from time to time. His advice is a wake up call for those of us play as though we need to prove how smart we are.

CONS
The book is very math light, so you won't find any modeling of hand distributions. I personally really enjoy hand distribution modeling, but it's yet to prove it's usefulness to me so I didn't miss it here. In fact, the shortcoming of modeling (for me) is that all of the math is only as valid as the assumptions (your read). So after reading "Killer Poker: By the Numbers", I felt that this book was a bit of a missing link between the modeling and reality.

The second short coming is that this book is really just a collection of all of his previous work. Is that so terrible? If you've managed to read just about ALL of his newspaper and magazine articles as well as his books and his section in Super System II; then you may feel like you've already read most of this book. Personally, I've ready A LOT of his writings, and I only recognized about 25% of it in this book.

For those who criticize his recommendation to create a wreckless table image (while actually playing solid), what do you think about Doyle Brunson's recommendation to create an aggressive table image by always betting and raising, or Johnny Chan's recommendation to the exact same thing? Or what about Daniel Negraneau's recommendation to appear to be a call station so you can't be read? Most players agree that it's good to appear more wreckless than you actually are. However, Mikes advice is in the minority that explains how to appear wreckless without actually being wreckless.

Complex advice!

It's rather difficult to clearly analyze Mike Caro's most recent book because some of the advice he gives is a bit controversial, and other parts can only be pulled off by experts.

First, let me state that there is a wealth of very valuable information in the book. Granted, much of it has been previously published in his earlier works, and magazine articles, but here, it's all available in one place. I especially liked the section about treating Hold'em as a business as well as the occasional piece that really made me think about my game.

However, Mr. Caro STRONGLY advocates creating a loose image in order to induce more calls, and increase profit. Several sections stress this, and advise the player how to do it. As I recall, he and another author, went round and round about this several years ago. To my mind, Mr. Caro has not proven that creating the loose image is the best path, especially for beginning players. Furthermore, and more importantly, it is very easy for a non-expert player to attempt this strategy and cost themselves some serious money. Newer players should be very careful in their attempts to be like Mike.

So, while I do recommend the book [all of Caro's material is worth reading]I strongly advise the players to be careful when implementing some of it's advise.

A Real Great Book

First of all this is a great poker book. I consider myself a stuent of the game and read ALOT of books on Hold em. Mike's advice is sound and works. He does advocate having a loose and playful image and it does illict more calls. How many times have you tightened up your play against a intimdating oponnet? I also find myself calling more than I should to friendly players with my marginal / semi strong hands. Mike's book put this whole psychology into a easily readable format. I noticed a distinct upswing in my profits after reading the book and implementing some of his techniques. Now this style of play is not or everyone. If you want to play like a rock and sneer at other players you will probally still make a profit, but you will be mising out on ALOT of extra money at the tables. Read the book and then reread it and all of his techinques fall into place. This book changed the way I play poker in so many ways.

I thought this was thorough exam prep book. To the point and helpful. Lots of practice, but it was pricey. I guess it's tough to put a price on your future though.
