The Menzies Era, by John Howard

An assessment of Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, by John Howard, Australia's second-longest serving Prime Minister, this is a significant, unique and fascinating history of the Menzies era - a time that laid the foundations for modern Australia.

'Engaging and revealing ... like a torchlight shone from an unexpected angle' Geoffrey Blainey, Weekend Australian

Fresh from the success of his phenomenal bestselling memoir, LAZARUS RISING, which has sold over 100,000 copies, John Howard now turns his attention to one of the most extraordinary periods in Australian history, the Menzies era, canvassing the longest unbroken period of government for one side of politics in Australia's history. The monumental Sir Robert Menzies held power for a total of over 18 years, making him the longest-serving Australian Prime Minister. During his second term as Prime Minister, a term of over sixteen years - by far the longest unbroken tenure in that office - Menzies dominated Australian politics like no one else has ever done before or since, and these years laid the foundations for modern Australia.

The Menzies era saw huge economic growth, social change and considerable political turmoil. Covering the impact of the great Labor split of 1955 as well as the recovery of the Labor Party under Whitlam's leadership in the late 1960s and the impact of the Vietnam War on Australian politics, this magisterial book offers a comprehensive assessment of the importance of the Menzies era in Australian life, history and politics. John Howard, only ten when Menzies rose to power, and in young adulthood when the Menzies era came to an end, saw Menzies as an inspiration and a role model. His unique insights and thoughtful analysis into Menzies the man, the politician, and his legacy make this a fascinating, highly significant book.

'This important book' Clive James, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
John Howard was Australia's 25th Prime Minister and our second longest serving PM. After a meteoric rise to become Treasurer at 38, the self-described economic radical and social conservative was sidelined. Years later, Howard bounced back to lead the Coalition to a resounding victory.

Good review of Australian politics from 1940 to 1972.
By Peter Bayley
A thoughtful book that gives a politicians insight to a formative period of Australia's political history from 1940 to 1972. It is well written and easy to read. John Howard's analysis of key political events is very interesting, objective and reflective. The second half of the book is stronger than the first and it is worthwhile going the distance. The final few chapters show great insight, but to appreciate them you need to read the whole book and leave these to the end.

Difficult to put down!
By G Sinclair
Having lived through this period of Australia's history, and having heard Menzies speak, I concur with so much of John Howard's comments about Australia's longest serving Prime Minister. Yes, Menzies was a riveting speaker and, by his personality and drive, he did mould Australia into the country we enjoy today. A fascinating read - extremely well researched.

A Rare Book on an Important Era of Australian Politics
By JOHN MILLS
There is no doubt that many of the reviewers who rate this book poorly are political opponents of John Howard and possibly Sir Robert Menzies. Some even admit to not even finishing the book. Others, I suspect, never even started it. The persistent reference to eyebrows is, to say the least, trite. In a tome that runs to over 700 pages there is one photo of the author (on the dust jacket). Naturally there are several photos of the Sir Robert. So let's keep this in perspective.
I assume that this book will attract readers familiar with or have an interest in Australian politics. For those unfamiliar with the story, Sir Robert Menzies was Autralia's longest serving prime minister. The author was Australia's second longest. Both came from the conservative side of politics and it is reasonable to state the author has a high regard for his subject in this book.
This is not a biography of Sir Robert but it attempts to describe an important period in Australia's growth. The Menzies governments before and after the Second World War provided important steps in Australia's political growth. His terms in office mainly covered the period of baby boomers after the war into the sixties. The bulk of his time in office was after he formed the Liberal Party of Australia. The author examines a host of issues that confronted Australia in this long period of government (and also that period after Menzies' retirement). While the author is a great admirer of Menzies he does not let him off the hook in some decisions about his leadership style. The evidence is provided in the close calls the Liberal Party faced in the fifties when, had it not been for the Labor Party's split (Labor being the main political opponents of Menzies for most of his time in office), there could have been a different outcome.
John Howard examines many issues but towards the end of the book the focus turns to the changing economy that neither major party saw coming. Taxation reform and the like come in for some serious analysis by the author.
The Menzies Era is not just about Robert Menzies. It embraces that period after his departure and follows the fortunes of subsequent prime ministers, John Gorton and William McMahon copping their fair share of criticism. While not explicitly saying so, the author suggests to me that the untimely death of Harold Holt started a domino reaction in Liberal leadership, culminating in the election of Gough Whitlam in 1972. The author is not shy to give Gough Whitlam his due as a powerful political opponent and leader. He is fulsome in his praise.
The book is well researched with seven pages of select biography. It also includes many interviews with living politicians who clearly recall those days.
Probably I had reservations about occasional references to John Howard's own time in government. This may be a selfie on the part of the author but then again, once prime minister there has to be opportunities to talk about one's own achievements. Then again, they weren't all achievements as John Howard is quick to point out times when he was slow to change his mind on certain policy decisions.
Potential readers should put aside personal political bias as none of the characters come out of this story untainted.
The style is comfortable, professional and explanatory when required. I am pleased I read it.
