A good starting point for Ancient Egyptian religion studies.

My only regret with this book was that it was far too short! However, it presented the Egyptian gods (or netjer, as the author refers to them) from a fresh, new perspective hitherto unseen in most texts pertaining to them (including most Wiccan "Egyptian" books). After so many years of poorly-researched books and manuals that used Budge or 70's romance novels as their references on the subject, it's good to see someone out there worth her salt putting effort into the matter (and amusing to see how many people imitate her pronunciations and use her definitions without giving her any credit whatsoever). This book touched me deeply, and has led me to question much of what I thought of the Egyptian belief system. For that alone, it is worth my praise. Now if she'd just write another one....

A great introduction for spiritual practice

This author has produced more updated material since The Neteru of Kemet was published, but this book is still a favorite in our household.

The book is formatted in vignettes that each include gentle visualizations which provide an excellent starting point for getting to know the Ancient Egyptian Gods on a personal level.

Readers who seek to begin a personal relationship with these Gods will find this book a helpful introduction.

Excellent Book to Start Learning About Kemet

I met Rev. Tamara Suida years ago and found her to be very knowledgable and well-qualified; you can trust the veracity of the information in this book. I have had this book since 1996 and have referred to it many times over the years. It is short but has translations of Kemetic poetry, the original names of the Kemetic deities as well as the later names (Aset is the original name of Isis, for example) and it has vignettes to meditate upon. There is also a useful bibliography and a handy glossary. It may be a short book but it is packed full of information; it is well worth the price. This book is a great introduction to the facts about ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) deities and history.

The 2nd Peanuts Book Ever!

I don't know where or how you're going to get the 1st Peanuts book, but if you do, please let me know! Anyways, this book is the early years of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Patti (no not Peppermint Patty who would come into the picture years later), Voilet, and Shermy. Also, Linus is introduced here as a baby. The characters look a little different than what you're used to since many of these cartoons originally date from 1952 and 1953. Lucy is kind of cute with her big eyes (no Psychiatric Help booth yet) and Snoopy was still a little puppy (he hadn't yet climbed to the top of his doghouse but he knew how to drive Charlie Brown and Schroeder nuts!). Anyways, a must for your collection if you can get your hands on it!

I loved peanuts as a child

I was a huge peanuts fan as a kid. And I had a lot of the books. Eventually, I got out of the phase, but when the movie was released, I found myself going back in. I loved peanuts as a child, and it is still my favorite. I love the old school peanuts, when snoopy was a cute little pup and patty, violet, shermy were bigger characters. I love when the series started and the kids were really little. Lucy was there, but she wasn't as in your face as she is today. Schroder and Linus were babies, and things were a lot different. I think the earliest peanuts strips were the best, and this book is a great representation of those strips. There are some really funny stories here...like about bare soup and dolly abuse. If you're a peanuts fan, or hoping to get your kid into the series, the first three books in the reprinted series are the best!

Hysterical! I'm really enjoying this book. These are the Peanuts I remember that make you laugh out loud. Lucy especially is a scream! Schultz was a genius. Get this book. You won't regret it.

Digital code is butt load of bull****!!!

Great book with great quality pages. I have not started playing the game yet because I actually bought the guide so I can get both digital and physical versions of this guide, but the reason why I only gave 4 stars is because the digital code to get access to the digital versions for free is a butt load of bull****! You only get "access" to the digital guide through prima's website. There isn't even an app to gain access to the guide. Its retarded how they're doing things now. When I bought my FFX & FFX-2 guidebook last year (May 2015), I also bought the digital version and I was able to download it in a pdf file format, which was great at the time. If they want to prevent free content from getting generated everywhere, then they should at least publish the books through Amazon's kindle app, or even through the iTunes store. Their online website is hard to navigate and how they're presenting the book is so not like the book at all! Don't buy the "online access", just go with this book, or go to gamefaqs for free guides. At least gamefaqs are better presented and only on one page.

Vander Ark has taken pains not to use Rowling's unique expressions, as the introduction calls that writer's words (for example, the book's readers learn that doxies have a poisonous bite; users of the Lexicon Web site find that doxies have sharp venomous teeth, plus a reference to Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Commentary unique to the volume follows many entries (one complaint at trial was that the proposed Lexicon reorganized Rowling's material without adding much information); these range from etymologies to pedestrian analyses (of Harry's reliance on the Expelliarmus spell versus Voldemort's on the Killing Curse: In the end, J.K. Rowling writes Harry as a person not of violence and murder, but of compassion and mercy—of love). It begins with a brief list of abbreviations that are used throughout the series and an explanation of date usage in the Lexicon. The remainder of the book contains alphabetical entries explaining characters, wizarding terms and phrases, and geographic locations (both real and fictional). Each entry has a brief description and a reference to the first time the term is mentioned in the novels. Character entries also include dates relating to the characters' lives and important positions they may have held, if known. Additional descriptive information beyond the connection to Harry Potter is included in italics when the term's origin outside of that universe is included or if further noncanonical explanation is required. It should be noted that the Lexicon is not a complete Harry Potter encyclopedia as many of the characters' fates remain undisclosed to preserve the experience for first-time readers. Just weeks after submitting an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals, RDR Books has withdrawn its challenge to Judge Robert P. Patterson's September ruling in J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. Entertainment's copyright infringement suit against the publisher. Judge Patterson's ruling blocked RDR's planned publication of The Harry Potter Lexicon by Steven Vander Ark. Instead, the company has announced plans to release a new unauthorized guide to the Potter series, The Lexicon: An Unauthorized Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Materials. The book will include commentary that does not appear on Vander Ark's Web site. RDR publisher Roger Rapoport said the new book has a new focus and purpose, mindful of the guidelines of the court.

Commenting on RDR's actions, Neil Blair, Rowling's attorney, said: We are delighted that this matter is finally and favourably resolved and that J.K. Rowling's rights -- and indeed the rights of all authors of creative works -- have been protected.We are also pleased to hear that rather than continue to litigate, RDR have themselves decided to publish a different book prepared with reference to Judge Patterson's decision.

Rapoport said the company decided to drop the appealbecause we are publishing a different manuscript that is a lot better. He emphasized that the new book, which features material from Vander Ark's original Harry Potter Lexicon website, new commentary and a blend of material, followed the road map the judge laid out in his opinion about how a companion to the Potter books may be published without infringing Rowling's copyright. We did what the judge told us to do, Rapoport said.

Vander Ark said he has been spending the last six months adding much more commentary about plot lines, characters and other elements in the books. This work serves as a companion to J. K. Rowling s Harry Potter books (Scholastic). It begins with a brief list of abbreviations that are used throughout the series and an explanation of date usage in the Lexicon. The remainder of the book contains alphabetical entries explaining characters, wizarding terms and phrases, and geographic locations (both real and fictional). Each entry has a brief description and a reference to the first time the term is mentioned in the novels. Character entries also include dates relating to the characters lives and important positions they may have held, if known. Additional descriptive information beyond the connection to Harry Potter is included in italics when the term s origin outside of that universe is included or if further noncanonical explanation is required. It should be noted that the Lexicon is not a complete Harry Potter encyclopedia as many of the characters fates remain undisclosed to preserve the experience for first-time readers. That being said, this volume will serve as a quick reference guide for enthusiasts of the series and as a good companion for teens writing fan fiction --School Library Journal

Complete but frustrating structure

I am an avowed Harry Potter fanatic, and I have been looking forward to this book for ages. It is, well, limited in its application. Given that it's arranged alphabetically (and having flipped through it several times it seems complete enough), it assumes that you know exactly what you're looking for, spelling and all. There is NO index, so if I wanted to look for a spell that, say, wrote reviews for amazon.com, I would be stymied unless I had a vague inkling as to how that spell might be, well, spelled. I had hoped that this book would be an substitute for his exhaustive website, and, unfortunately, it is merely a reference book to his website. In addition to the lack of index (which is THE most frustrating omission), off the top of my head, I can think of several things that should have been included and yet are not (and, I assume, would not run afoul of the JKR legal team): family trees; timelines for the novels; listing of who is in what house, both in the present era and in the previous era; and listing of teachers (past and present). These are just off the top of my head. I still think this book very valuable on one level, but it is NOT even marginally a substitute for his excellent website. An index would have induced me to give it another star.

Disappointing, but has its benefits

Steve Vander Ark's website, the Harry Potter Lexicon, can be an incredibly useful tool at times, though difficult to navigate. The book is much the same way. A wealth of information is contained in this book, but in most cases, unless you know specifically what you are looking for, you may never find it. For example, there is no rhyme or reason as to how spells are placed in this encyclopedia. The most sensible way would be to list the name of the spell in its alphabetical place (for example, Diffindo) and the common name of the spell ("severing charm") in its place. Each should have a note referencing the other ("see also: 'Diffindo'"). This is almost never the case. Sometimes, in fact, the only information listed about a spell is the proper name. Of course, if you didn't know what the proper name was, and simply wanted to find the digging charm used in Deathly Hallows, you would probably never find it, as it is only listed as its proper name.
Another issue with the book is the fact that not all information about the characters is listed. I understand that it would be impossible (and slightly illegal) to write a complete biography of each character, but there are inconsistencies when listing birth and death dates. The disclaimers on the front, back, and inside of the book make mention of the fact that some information was left out- we can assume that the author was not allowed to "spoil" much of the actual series due to the litigation that hounded the publishing of this encyclopedia. When I noticed that several characters who died in the Battle of Hogwarts did not have their death dates listed, I assumed that the author was not allowed to share this information, for fear of spoiling the last book for readers. And yet, other death dates for characters who perished in the final Harry Potter book are listed. There is no reasoning provided for inconsistencies like this.
Finally, the book has several factual, grammatical, and spelling errors. The biggest one I have noticed so far (I am not quite finished reading the book) is that Fred and George Weasley are listed as being born eight months before Charlie Weasley. We all know Charlie is older- and it seems unlikely that Mrs. Weasley would have been able to give birth again that soon, anyway. This is a mistake that a fan should have caught and corrected easily. Alas, here it is, in this book.
The only true benefit I have been able to find so far is that so much extra information (from interviews, chats, etc.) is listed in the books. Information is culled from a variety of canon and non-canon sources, including the Famous Wizard cards, the Daily Prophet newsletters, Rowling herself, interviews, etc. This was most appreciated.
All in all, I'd say that you're either better off sifting through information on the website or getting this book from your local library rather than buying it. Most of the information is available for free online, from the author of this book, and I think that might be preferable to having a disorganized, sometimes sloppily written, unattractive book on my bookshelf.

Useful and delightful tool

"The Lexicon" is more than a glossary of Harry Potter terminology. This listing of names, terms, geographical and magical markers offers definitions, descriptions and connections that are magical, even for muggles. Furthermore, the book captures the spirit and sparkle of the Harry Potter series (and canon) in a way that is faithful to J. K. Rowling's creation and the readers' need to plumb the depths of the individual books or the entire saga. Congratulations to the compiler Steve Vander Ark and his associates. Their vision and perseverance have produced good results. "The Lexicon" is a significant resource for those who take J. K. Rowling's writing seriously.
