Needs updated pictures

I am an equine practitioner and have borrowed this book on occaision to try to compare images, but the book images are of poor quality, particularly compared to the newer ultrasound machines out there today. On more occaisions than not the quality was so poor on the images that it wasn't any help. Unfortunately I think someone needs to print a more current version with updated pictures.

Good book on the basics of equine ultrasound. Good on expanding my knowledge base: I'm a small animal internist who is learning about equine. I am not sure if there is a more current edition, and I believe this is now out of print, so get one while you can!

Nip & Tuck, more like Yap & Yuck

If I could use one word to some up this book, I'd have a hard time figuring out which one I would use... But after a day & a half of deliberation I've whittled the list down to two words.... Unreadable & Blerg (Blerg being the sound one makes when one starts to drive heave while reading something this unreadable).

The main character is an unlikable, passive aggressive, personality deprived, narcissistic, troll, whose entirely life seems to revolve around being as unlikeable as possible. She also seems to be suffering from some kind of degenerative speech impediment where she must constantly speak in broken witticism, that are neither coherent, nor witty..... In a battle of the wits, our protagonist has shown up completely unarmed.

This book is the work of a truly warped individual, there is no other excuse I can see for a book with its head shoved up its own rhetoric like this book. It tries to hammer home important life lessons about growing old, but does it in the most disjointed, schizophrenic way possible. It constantly contradicts itself, it constantly has the actions of the protagonist slip straight into actions that would get you thrown into jail for life & to compensate for that the villains who might as well just be called "all men everywhere" are depicted as moustache twirling caricatures of evil.

Frankly, this book set back gender relations but about 200 years, so well done on that. Needless to say this book should be avoided like the plague.... Actually if given the choice between the Black Death & this book, pick the black death, its faster & less painful then trying to make your way through this horribly written, stilted narrative, of a passive aggressive woman, of limited mental faculties.

Discussions and recommendations about these matters are the always headache-maker in this age. But experience helps to cope with.

I have enjoyed Kathy Lette's previous books, loved her sense of humour. Read 'To Love Honor and Betray' and 'How to Kill your husband' but this is her worst. It's overdone and unrealistic.

Fair, but not great.

Although it's a huge book, it only discusses basic topics that are only useful for amateurs who've never heard about facilities before. I don't recommend this book for professionals. I can't believe it was published by Association for Facilities Engineering. The only good side is that it covers a wide range of topics.

A Fun Book, Especially if Kids Know Someone With a Beard

First of all the author has taken the time to format this book so it takes up the whole Kindle Fire screen, so that the words and pictures display together on the page like they would in a traditional physical picture. So many picture book authors are too lazy to do this and you get a few lines of text on one page, and the picture on another, so I always like to take the time to give the accolades to authors when they do this in my reviews. It shows they actually care about the reading experience of those who purchase their books.

The great formatting allows you to appreciate the great colourful cartoon like illustrations. The bear with the beard, as well as other bearded animals he and his human little girl companion meet are fun and look great. I liked the details in the illustrations, such as the little girl was missing teeth as real children do. This is basically an appreciation of the beard story done in a fun way like the band The Beards do in their songs. Although this is a kids book so all the words are completely child age friendly. The reader learns how much the little girl loves her friend the bear and his beard as they visit other animals.

Don't stop at the last page of the book either, there's some one line reviews on the book by other famous bearded characters such as Santa after the final page. They add even more humour to the story.

Fun, funny, and a great pace. Quite a clever idea as well. I too, think the bearded bear is "quite handsome".

Illustrations:

Awesome. The artwork is simple and adorable. I love the dynamic between the bear and the little girl throughout the book. The pages are also laid out very nicely for easy reading. A non-standard font was used for the text, but it works very well and is a good size for both parents and kids to read.

Cover:

Nicely done. Just enough shown to hint at the content without giving everything away. Very clever. Nice layout as well, with excellent text treatment.

Fun for your favorite bearded dude (or their kid)

I love the clean, simple, quirky and engaging art. The little girl with the lumbering bearded bear is a charmer. There are enough unexpected little details in the art to keep pre-readers attention on the page, too.

Their adventures around the world (meeting other bearded animals, naturally!) are fun.

My only quibble is that the rhyme scheme and meter falter here and there, which makes it a more challenging read-aloud if it's your first run through it.

Still, for a child whose Dad has a whiskery beard - or the whiskery fellow himself! - this is a quirky, engaging little story.

Multinational firms can artificially shift profits from high-tax to low-tax jurisdictions using a variety of techniques, such as shifting debt to high-tax jurisdictions. Since tax on the income of foreign subsidiaries (except for certain passive income) is deferred until repatriated, this income can avoid current U.S. taxes and perhaps do so indefinitely. The taxation of passive income (called Subpart F income) has been reduced, perhaps significantly, through the use of “hybrid entities” that are treated differently in different jurisdictions. The use of hybrid entities was greatly expanded by a new regulation (termed “check-the-box”) introduced in the late 1990s that had unintended consequences for foreign firms. In addition, earnings from income that is taxed can often be shielded by foreign tax credits on other income. On average very little tax is paid on the foreign source income of U.S. firms. Ample evidence of a significant amount of profit shifting exists, but the revenue cost estimates vary from about $10 billion to $60 billion per year. Individuals can evade taxes on passive income, such as interest, dividends, and capital gains, by not reporting income earned abroad. In addition, since interest paid to foreign recipients is not taxed, individuals can also evade taxes on U.S. source income by setting up shell corporations and trusts in foreign haven countries to channel funds. There is no general third party reporting of income as is the case for ordinary passive income earned domestically; the IRS relies on qualified intermediaries (QIs) who certify nationality without revealing the beneficial owners. Estimates of the cost of individual evasion have ranged from $40 billion to $70 billion. Most provisions to address profit shifting by multinational firms would involve changing the tax law: repealing or limiting deferral, limiting the ability of the foreign tax credit to offset income, addressing check-the-box, or even formula apportionment. President Obama’s proposals include a proposal to disallow overall deductions and foreign tax credits for deferred income and restrictions on the use of hybrid entities. Provisions to address individual evasion include increased information reporting and provisions to increase enforcement, such as shifting the burden of proof to the taxpayer, increased penalties, and increased resources. Individual tax evasion is the main target of the HIRE Act, the proposed Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act, and the Senate Finance Committee proposals; some revisions are also included in President Obama’s plan.

Moving, emotional book that brings awareness to HELLP

Wow! I'm not sure I can adequately express how I felt about this book. I have never dealt with HELLP syndrome (though I have a couple of friends who have), but I have lost a child (infant), and had to deal with being diagnosed with preeclampsia during one of my pregnancies. I found the author's words very relatable. I understand the depth of her pain after finding out she had lost her baby in the hospital. Her grief is palpable. I found myself almost holding my breath through some parts. And as a bereaved parent the entire book brought me to tears.

In addition, I think the author does an amazing job of bringing awareness to HELLP syndrome by writing about everything that she endured. I don't think that enough people know about this life-threatening condition, and I think more must be done to talk about it so that women are educated and know they are not alone.

This was me....

This was nice to read (as nice as reading about something so horrible can be). My husband and I lost our baby boy, Isaac, at 32 weeks in much the same manner 3 weeks ago. My doctor ignored the symptoms and I ended up 9 hours from home at a tiny hospital with no idea what was happening to me or the life I had planned for our baby. It's so relieving to see the author with a happy healthy baby at the end. It's terrifying to think about another baby now, but it's all that brings us hope in this terrible time of our lives.

The similarities in our experiences are unfortunately remarkable. She's very brave to write it for the world to see. Thanks for having the courage to share.

Courageous and emotional book bringing awareness to HELLP and Babyloss

Although I have not personally experienced HELLP I have several friends who have. My firstborn son died during the last month of my pregnancy from unknown causes. He was stillborn just 3 weeks before his due date. Early on in my grief journey I sought to get my hands on any and every book, website, article about baby loss- anything I could find that would help me understand what I was going through. Anything to help me realize I wasn't alone in my grief and that there were people who understood my heart shattering pain.

If you are a mom struggling through the loss of your child- regardless of how they passed away- this book will help you. It won't take away the pain. It won't fix anything. It won't bring your beloved baby back. But the author's raw description of the loss of her daughter and the near loss of her own life will help you realize that you are not alone in your grief. You will hold your breath at some points because of the vivid descriptions of the events surrounding the loss of sweet Ava. You will cry with her as you read the details of her emotions throughout it all. It is incredibly brave of Melissa to share these intimate details of such a painful time in her life.

I think this book is a great opportunity to bring awareness to HELLP and also to the trauma of babyloss. No parent should ever have to outlive their child. I appreciate Melissa so much for taking her anguish and channeling it to help others struggling through a similar loss. I would recommend this book to anyone as a resource for HELLP and babyloss. Babyloss is so incredibly isolating. It's important for parents who have lost a child to know they are not alone. This books also provides resources for bereaved parents that will be very helpful during such a difficult time.
