About the Author

Kristin A. Bates is a Professor of Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies at California State University, San Marcos. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington where she concentrated in criminology and social control. She has been teaching Juvenile Delinquency in both large and small sections for over 20 years. Her research is in the area of inequality and social justice, with a specific focus on issues of race and social control. Her current research project with Richelle Swan is looking at gang injunctions’ impact on the community in Southern California. She is the co-editor of Through the Eye of Katrina: Social Justice in the United States (2nd edition) (with Richelle Swan), and co-author of Deviance and Social Control: A Sociological Perspective (2nd edition) and Perspectives in Deviance and Social Control (with Michelle Inderbitzin and Randy Gainey).

 

Richelle S. Swan is a Professor of Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies at California State University, San Marcos. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminology, Law & Society from the University of California, Irvine, and her M.S. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. She teaches a number of classes related to delinquency, crime, law & social justice. Her ongoing research projects focus on the topics of gang injunction laws in Southern California with Kristin Bates), and the intersection between law, undocumented immigration and society (with Marisol Clark-Ibáñez). Past research has included works on topics such as problem solving courts, welfare fraud diversion, restorative justice, and social justice movements. Interest yet frustrating

This was required for a juvenile delinquency class I took. I am very interested in the concepts in this book but in my opinion the writers did not organize this book very well. The book is random and a bit confusing. I also believe that it is horribly biased and they would often leave out certain details about the case studies they used, some of those case studies were high profile incidents. Almost everything in this book is controversial.

About the Author
Irving Bigio is Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Boston University. His research activities address the interactions of light with cellular and tissue structures on the microscopic and mesoscopic scales. He pioneered methods of elastic scattering spectroscopy and has developed practical diagnostic and sensing applications that have been demonstrated in large clinical studies. He has co-authored over 200 scientific publications and is an inventor on nine patents.

Sergio Fantini is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University. His research interests in biomedical optics are in the area of diffuse spectroscopy and imaging of biological tissue. He has contributed to the development of quantitative frequency-domain methods for absolute tissue oximetry, spectral imaging approaches to optical mammography, and the assessment of cerebral hemodynamics in the human brain. He has co-authored about 200 scientific publications and is an inventor on ten patents.

Fine, but there's a newer, and nicer version

I just bought this along with The Action Bible Guess-It Game, and they are the exact same game, but this is the older version. Darn. I thought they would have different questions, but they don't. So, get the newer, nicer version for the same price. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

This is a card game version of "20 Questions" that gives 20 clues to a person, place, or thing mentioned in the Bible. It's challenging enough for adults, but the last few questions make it a fairly easy guess for any kid with a basic familiarity with Bible stories. Great packable game for road trips with our middle school youth group.

Infuriating but essential

Actually the same could be said of the man himself. The evaluation thesaurus is difficult to define and place. It is not so much a thesaurus or dictionary as a series of mini (and not so mini) essays from one of evaluation's leading philosophers.
Michael Scriven has strong views about the place, role and requirements of evaluation, and he uses this book, amongst other things, to lecture on these subjects. The book starts with an extended introduction to (Scriven's view of) the place of evaluation within the academic world, much of which is focused on an over-extended geographical metaphor of academic disciplines. The point of this is an attempt to stake elevaluation's claim to independence as a "trans-discipline" servicing other disciplines in a similar fashion to statistics. (Despite this declaration of independence, Scriven himself is employed within a School of Education)
More useful are the entries themselves, which alert readers to issues such as the "Harvard fallacy" (the assumption that a programme must be good because of its outcomes, without considering any advantages that it might derive, for example from having exceptional student intakes) and the fact that evaluators cannot avoid making value judgements.
You do not have to agree with Scriven, but you need to address the issues he raises if you are serious about evaluation.

A must-have for EVERY serious evaluator! Informative and entertaining

This may be a 1991 publication but it's still a crucially important addition to any serious evaluator's bookshelf.

An added bonus is that fantastic Scrivenesque humor that will give you a chuckle when you stumble across some of the all-time classic entries. One of my favorites:

TERROR An effect frequently induced by goal-free evaluation (sometimes by the *thought* of it) in most of the cast of evaluation actors -- evaluators, program managers, evaluees. The "terror test" is the use of this awful threat to weed out the incompetent. Since everyone uses goal-free evaluation whenever they buy anything for themselves, it is not a good sign of their concern for consumers that they think it inappropriate for program evaluation.

Got to love it! Get this book!!!

[Those wanting user-friendly "subtitles" on some of the more difficult concepts may, like Michael Scriven's graduate students, find this book useful: Evaluation Methodology Basics: The Nuts and Bolts of Sound Evaluation :) ]
