Davis D.Joyce, Professor of History at East Central University, Ada , Oklahoma , served from 1994 to 1996 as Soros Professor of American Studies at Kossuth University in Hungary. He is the author of Edward Channing and the Great Work and History and Historians: Some Essays, editor of A History of the United States by Edward Channing, and coauthor of United States History: A Brief Introduction for Hungarian Students (with Tibor Glant) and The Writing of American History, also published by the University of  Oklahoma Press.

Good Collection of Essays on Oklahoma

This was a supplemental text to a section of Oklahoma history (not the one taught by Dr. Joyce though) I took last semester at college. The essays cover a wide variety of topics and are very thought provoking. One essay in particular debates the value of "celebrating" the Land Run of 1889. When I was in second grade, my elementary school commemorated the Land Run by holding a mock run and we were made to believe it was a fun, adventurous event. Now that I'm older and have learned more about the Run, I have great uncertainties about whether such a celebration should take place.
Goble's "Southern Influence on Oklahoma" was also intriguing. Political scientists and historians aren't sure how to classify Oklahoma because this state is a combination of Midwestern, Western and Southern. In his essay, Goble lists the many political and religious elements from the South that have shaped Oklahoma over the years. All things considered, this would be a great buy for anyone interested in Oklahoma history.

Informative essays about the "flip-side" history of Oklahoma

As the reviewer below was, I too was a student in Dr. Joyce's Oklahoma History class and this book was a required text for the course. After reading the essays of the book which deal with a more radical history of Oklahoma that is definitely not as well known in this state such as the Abortion Rights Movement, Gay Rights, the stealing of land from the Native Americans by White Men during the land rush of the 1880's-1890's, etc,.
Dr Joyce has brought together some very eye opening essays from various writers who have either first hand experience or from those who are subject matter experts.
This is the type of book that should be required reading to all high school students in Oklahoma. Yes, the book is definitely controversial and would upset those with conservative, "right-wing" viewpoints, however with that said, it describes events in the state's history that everyone should be concerned about.
I admire Dr. Joyce and the conviction that made him write this book, and I highly recommended it to all who want to know a viewpoint of Oklahoma, its people and history that is generally not well known.

This "cafeteria Catholic" reviewer was born in ChicagoLand during the reign of Mayor Richard Daley I (American Pharaoh: Mayor Richard J. Daley - His Battle for Chicago and the Nation), and graduated public High School in Wisconsin, in 1972, having never heard of Shakespeare, or Hamlet, knowing how to milk the cows of America's Dairyland, but never having heard mention of Joseph McCarthy, former US Senator from WISCONSIN and those in his wake (No Sense of Decency: The Army-McCarthy Hearings: A Demagogue Falls and Television Takes Charge of American Politics.) I proceeded onward to a Lutheran College in Northfield The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, Minnesota, where they made us eat this Gawd-Awful lye-soaked fish and never spoke of the James Gang, but raged on and on about the evils of the Vatican, and the Glory of Luther's Ninety-Five Theses in mandatory twice weekly religion classes. They taught me about that Shakespeare guy and his man Hamlet.
I spent a lot of time out in Wounded Knee, and one day turned South back on I-35 and wound up in Oklahoma.
I throw in all that personal geographical history because it illustrates Professor Joyce's (and, in a countrywide view, Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present (P.S.)) point that "History" is often fabricated, or at least selectively reported, by the prevailing "Power Structure." (Read Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto (Civilization of the American Indian)).
At the University of Oklahoma, I was dutifully instructed on how to contain, and eventually stop, a cattle stampede. I was *not* taught about Angie Debo's watershed book on the travesties against the survivors of the Trail of Tears And Still the Waters Run nor the fact that the Founding FATHERS at OU refused to allow her to teach there.
But they must be getting better - or at least getting a sense of humour. In his intro, Joyce writes "... in that inevitable taking of sides which comes from selection and emphasis in Oklahoma history, I prefer to tell the story of Oklahoma's pre- (and history) from the point of view of ... the Run of `89 [for you non-Okies, this is when Oklahoma and Indian Territories were "opened up" to land-grabbing non-Indians, despite the fact that the grass was still growing and the Rivers still Flowing, and therefore the previously promised perpetual treaties had not expired. The "Boomers" were the "law-abiding" land thieves who waited for the "official" Boom of the start gun, the "Sooners" snuck in - well - sooner!] as seen by the Indians already here, ... the University of Oklahoma's much vaunted football success as seen by the bright students who feel compelled to leave the state for high-quality education and jobs, or as seen by the athlete who never gets a degree; and so on ..."
Boy Howdy! This book was published in 1994 by THE University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OKlahoma, the institution former University President George Lynn Cross urged to become "a university our football team can be proud of."

One more thing about the introduction: Joyce asks "Couldn't our view of Oklahoma history use a little reshuffling of heros and villians? Why, for example, isn't Woody Guthrie in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame?"
What? This reviewer was flabbergasted. So, while singing "This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land" to myself (and hoping that I wouldn't have to rouse all the folk on son Arlo's infamous Group W bench into action,) I did some updated internet research and am pleased to announce that Woody was rightfully but belatedly inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. In 2006. (Angie Debo got in in 1950.)
This book should be required reading in all Oklahoma curricula. And every state should have one like it. Bravo, Professor Joyce! (See also Alternative Oklahoma: Contrarian Views of the Sooner State.) The footnotes are great, except that it required massive use of my Amazon Prime membership and the construction of yet another "Some Assembly Required" bookcase. "The Southern Influence of Oklahoma" article validated every inchoate concept I had about the Sooner State - my internal guide has always been any state wherein the predominance of the populace drawls and avails itself of some form of "you all" as the Second Person Plural is "Southern," linguisticly, socially, and politicly - despite Frederick Jackson Turner and Okie protestations that they are a "mid-western" state just because they have an Oklahoma City suburb named Midwest City! And the article on the integration/lunch counter sit-ins is important for younger generations to understand. It's the Santayana thing: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

This was a pretty good read

This was a pretty good read. This was not just a book about hair loss, but about our health in general. It points out the rising trend that more and more young men are suffering from male pattern baldness at earlier ages. And that indigenous people like "Eskimos" don't seem to suffer from this affliction. It considers what many in the scientific community studying hair loss in men do not consider, and that is MPB may not be the result of random genetics happening to people "Just cause". Slator makes a compelling argument for MPB being the result of poor health brought about by unnatural habits modern men in society practice. From eating against our individual genetics to sexual practices that deplete vital "energies" or nutrients (A view not considered by modern science as a correlation to MPB since it is based off of an opposing view in their health) this book considers multiple angles and how each may be a factor. Another great plus is that these alternative approaches can be halted and possibly reversed through simple means like finding your correct diet or changing your bedroom practices. This is an interesting solution than just get surgery or wait for the next medical miracle.
The downside is that some of the conclusions can seem drawn from vague sources at times and the author seems unable to backup many of his claims with authoritative expert sources. It would really help his position if he could get a third party opinion from some trusted source. The questionnaire about finding the correct diet seemed good at first, but there was an instance of a question repeating itself, and a few possible answers to some of the questions missing. While not discrediting does weaken the argument that it is valid for finding your correct or natural diet.
All in all I would say that even if your are not a balding man wanting to stop his hair from falling out, this book is still a must read for anyone studying the subject. It might make a few leaps but the arguments deserve more research and it is a shame the scientific establishment studying this phenomenon don't do them. It is still a refreshing read on the subject and can remind a reader that there are other views of health and that no single answer is necessarily the right answer.

Not Bad / Not Great - But a subject that needs more coverage.

I felt compelled to write a review since it doesn't look like this book has any yet. The title certainly grabbed my attention, but overall at least for me, there wasn't much that I hadn't read before online. I skimmed through quite a bit of the book because of that. I will probably go back and read it again. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. The author presents a number of modern health concepts/habits with the focus being hair. I think if you've never researched hair loss in any depth online or any kind of health self improvement, you'll find this book full of things you might have never thought of before. I am curious though as to why the author at some point in the book mentions "his client's," but there is no information in the book about who the author is or what kind of background he comes from.

"This is an outstanding text on computer organization compared to what we have today. This text has several aspects that are very important for undergraduates and unique compared to existing texts, including i) required level of emphasis on I/O and buses (instead of focusing only on processor, cache and memory), ii) in-depth discussion on memory as well as disk technology, iii) use of ARM ISA as a vehicle, and iv) making the practical connection of architecture with application domains including multimedia and compression. On one hand this book provides lot of interesting and required insights. On the other hand, it makes interesting for readers to understand the link between computer organization and real-world applications."

"This book is a very nice read. It explains difficult concepts with simplicity and ease. It gives interesting historical perspectives at several places. It makes very good use of diagrams and blue boxes to explain difficult concepts, and drive home the points."

"I think it is a great idea to use ARM because it is so popular in embedded systems and the students may see ARM processors in other classes later. Unlike some other texts which concentrate on CPUs, this book covers CPU and as well as other parts of a computer system in details, i.e. memory, bus, Input/output. Chapter 12 is my favorite because I/O and buses are important topics in computer architecture."

About the Author
Alan Clements studied Electronics at the University of Sussex. He was awarded a Ph.D. at Loughborough University in equalizers for digital data transmission in 1976. During the 1970s when literature on microcomputer design was comparatively rare, Dr. Clements wrote one of the first books in this area, The Principles of Computer Hardware. It was one of the first undergraduate texts to cover the whole spectrum of computer hardware at an introductory level, with topics ranging from Boolean algebra to peripherals that measure rotational velocity. In the 1980s Dr. Clements wrote a definitive text on microprocessor systems design which featured Motorola processors. Motorola honored Dr. Clements by endowing him with a personal chair at Teesside. Following his earlier successes Dr. Clements has become increasingly interested in the problems of teaching computer architecture and involved with education. In 2001 he became chair of the Computer Society's international student competition, CSIDC and in the same year received a National Teaching Fellowship in the UK, the UK's highest award for higher education. In 2009 he was elected Fellow of the IEEE for contributions to computer science education and became also became second Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Clements is the recipient of the 2002 Computer Science Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award (IEEE CS) for teaching excellence reflected on textbooks with major impact on computer architecture education as well is the 2007 Taylor L. Booth award recipient for outstanding contributions to education in the field of computer architecture.

Good book, but missing helpful study tools.

This is a good book. It has a ton of information, maybe too much information. I had to use this book for one of my CS classes. The content of the book was great, but there were a few issues with the book, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First, many of the chapters are massive. Some of the chapters are approaching 100 pages, and they are jam-packed with information. I have been a straight-A student in Computer Science since 2008, but I still found this book hard to follow at times, because there was too much information packed into each chapter.

However, the two main problems that I had with this book, is that the index is almost useless. I use the indices of textbooks religiously. I need to be able to quickly look up information, especially, when a book is this jam-packed with information. The chapters are too large to quickly scan them and find some information; however, the index never worked for me. None of the topics that we needed in my class were included in the index, even though the book covered those topics. I found myself forever flipping through the book trying to find the information I needed. I wasted so much time.

On top of that, this book has no glossary. In my opinion, that is also a huge oversight. I need the glossary so I can quickly look up terms and find the definition of things. I found it very hard to study with this book, because I wasn't able to find my way around it very easily. Topics are split up through multiple chapters and I never had any idea where I was at, or where I needed to look to find information.

If the author is reading this, and plans on writing a second edition, make sure to include a glossary, at the very least. It would also be nice to have a way to quickly look up instructions. What if I needed to quickly look up MVN or STRB to see what it meant? There is no way to do that with this book. I am left flipping page after page until I get lucky and find the instructions, or I have to abandon the textbook and start looking online, which defeats the purpose of me paying for such a high-priced book. All of the information in text books today can be found online. One of the advantages I like about textbooks, is that they help organize the information you require, so it can be easily located. This book failed to do that.

Overall, I am still giving it 4 stars, because there is a ton of good information in this book. It is loaded with code examples, diagrams and other resources to help you understand the topics. I can tell someone put a lot of hard work into writing this book, they just slipped on a few important tools, like a usable index and glossary.

This book is clearly written by academics for academia. The author seems to be a bit rough an unapologetic about it. I am sure there are better books and authors out there for this material, but if this is the book you are assigned, you have to make due with what you are given.

This is the best valued and most up to date monograph of the 2014 Prtizker Prize laureate. Mr. Ban demonstrated the humanitarian spirit through problem solving in economical methods without compromising aesthetic of the design. An inspiration of what an architect should do.
The book showcased large and and beautiful photographs of his work from beginning of his career until 2015. A great addition to your library. The drawbacks are that there are not many drawings to explain his projects, and writings are general. But that’s just the a-hole in me of trying to expect more in a killer deal.

Good enough

Simply written and with good empirical and theoretical basis here the author presents the H factor and gives us context about the HEXACO personality model and its history. It also gives us a brief explanation of the contemporary dominant personality model the FFM but most important he resumes the work from various studies and adapts it to an every day life approach. Tho is could be more didactic or colorful, as some might prefer it, i find it very useful.

Another excellent ready by Cristin Harber!

After barreling through Only For Him, I was super excited to read this follow up. The character development in this series is excellent, and I feel as if the author left nothing out. I felt instantly connected to the story early on.

The relationship between Emma and Garyson is so compelling, and even after reading the first two in this series, I am still so excited to read the others. I felt such a connection to the characters and the story of their unwavering love, even in times of separation and difficulty.

The inclusion of some characters from her other series HAD me. And the ending had me laughing so hard, I was crying and pumping my fist in the air! Simply CANNOT wait until her next books!

Wow! I've been a fan of Cristin Harber ever since I was introduced to her Titan Series.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book since I kind of went into this series blind. Though I'm glad I did because I truly enjoyed getting to know Emma and Grayson. Only for Her, picks up right where Only from Him ends and boy did it leave us hanging!

My heart broke for Emma in this book And learning where her life journey went after Grayson left.. But we soon find out that true love never dies.

Overall I loved this book. Looking forward to part 3!

Very predictable.
I did get invovled in the story, but it pisses me off that I have to stop reading every 125 pages to buy a new "book"! Why on earth is it not just one book!?
Thisted alone costs a star. Should have cost more for how much it irritated me
