The concepts include:

Framework

Three levels of analytics. Many analytics teams are at #2, where they are called on to provide analytics, acting as providers of data or advice. At #3, analytics is used to drive value from making effective decisions.

Six components of analytics, three that fall into the traditional buckets of analytics, business, and IT (Decision Modeling, BI, and Decision Making), and three that get misplaced and trip up the practice of analytics: Data Stewardship, Decision Execution, and Decision Framing.

Decisions occur in four layers: strategic, planning, scheduling, and workflow. Analytics models enable and interconnect these layers. These analytics layers can map to the systems in the Viable System Model proposed by Stafford Beer.

Decision framing for the decision layers

Decision modeling for the decision layers, including optimization, statistics, machine learning, surveying, experiments, etc. Defines what an analytics deliverable should contain.

Decision making and managing biases

Decision execution as a closed loop. How to apply what we've learned about motivation, incentive systems, and management by objectives.

The evolution of BI (business intelligence) tools into closed-loop analytics systems that can place analytics tools in the context of business apps.

Data management including assessment, scrubbing, enrichment, tagging, hierarchies, and categories.

Making organizations smarter by driving a culture of analytics

Building an analytics capability, such as an Analytics CoE (Center of Excellence)

Analytics methods, that can serve as project templates

About the Author
Rahul Saxena is the Director in Advanced Services at Cisco Systems. He is an MBA from the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans. Rahul has worked in business analytics, operations management, and management consulting roles in the USA, India, and Latin America. Prior to assuming his current position at Cisco Systems, Rahul held various positions at McAfee, IBM and the Indian Railways. He has also co-authored an IBM Redbook on Business Architecture.

Anand Srinivasan is the founder and CEO of Dsquare Solutions, a boutique analytics services and consulting firm. He holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an MS (Industrial Engineering) from Purdue University. Prior to assuming his current position Anand held various positions at Sabre Airline Solutions, Mu Sigma Business Solutions and Dell, all of them focused on building state of the art business analytics and optimization solutions.

Superb book on Business Analytics for Practitioners and their Managers

This 162-page book is a good read for those wanting a thorough overview of all key elements of Business Analytics from data scrubbing through working with client executives. The authors, Rahul Saxena and Anand Srinivasan, have deep experiences as analytics practitioners and as directors of analytics teams. As a result, their book is particularly well suited for analysts & developers wanting to see the "complete picture" of analytics best practices and managers/leaders of analytics teams. Client management wanting to increase the consumption of analytics in their organizations would also benefit. The book's writing is clear and could be read quickly, but the wise reader will pause intermittently to reflect and make notes on specific changes to make in his/her organization.

A true gem!

The ABC of CARE is a wonderful book detailing the author's journey through care for her severely ill husband at home. But this is beyond a "do it yourself" sort of book. Beautifully written, this book gives you valuable and hard-earned advice on how to deal with a seemingly impossible situation with grace, love and class. Ms. Marshall's ability to bring literature and wine into the mix, make reading ABC every bit as joyful as a novel. But fiction this is not. A few weeks after I read the book, I was faced with the news of a close friend's unusual health condition. Suggestions listed in the book came immediately rushing back and I was able to support my friend without becoming a burden.

I highly recommend this book.

quite ok

there are a lot of typo and unit errors (this can be misleading to students). i got no choice , to buy this book as my text book. this book is good but not so many examples of problems to further understand it. explanation is also not well elaborated on some topics. (students need more explanation to understand). no exercise included to try. the contents are good though. This book is too expensive for a lot of errors and no examples/exercise. a moderate rating!

Too many errors

This book was littered with too many errors! A few errors here and there are sometimes going to happen, but this book is unacceptable for the intended audience (engineers, hydrologists, etc.)! The grammatical errors did not bother me as much as the technical errors. A number of equations were wrong, as were a bunch of the values in the example problems. It was very difficult to learn or understand the material when I had no idea where certain numbers came from. Was it a typo or was the value the correct value? With the number of errors I found, and I am not a non-point pollution expert, how do I have faith that what the rest of the author tells me is accurate?

For a profession in which accuracy is very important, this book fails and the author/editors should be embarrassed. I will not be using this as a reference.

Great Book for Dealing With NPS Pollution

This is a great book for dealing with Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution. It covers a fairly comprehensive list of topics, while not going into great depth on most. It gives you enough information to get a good start on just about ANY analysis related to NPS pollution and a solid beginning to expand your research from if more in-depth analysis is required. In my opinion, this is a great reference for anyone working in water quality, and a "must-have" for working with NPS.

Patent battles

Books on inventions are few and far between, but van Dulken has now written several and all are welcome additions to the genre. The latest book looks to the future, and ground-breaking concepts in the public domain. They include all the obvious electronic gizmos (ebook reader, ipod, iphone, wii console, etc) and some well known contenders such as the bladeless fan from Dyson. But who has heard of the non-spill dog bowl? Perhaps there is a market for such devices unknown to the general public. It will always be difficult to predict what inventions are going to win the race to market, although the gizmos are sure to triumph in the near future, as the current patent wars between Apple and Samsung show very clearly. As for the rest, life is already more difficult for the average Joe as a result of bank woes, and recession, so luxury items such as dog bowls are likely to satisfy only a tiny minority. Recycling is here to stay, and the PET recycling process one way to reuse valuable plastics. What we don't get in this book is the competitive angle. There must be many other patents for recycling PET, but we are just not told what they, are or who owns them out there. We are informed about the ongoing software patent battles however, another active front in the patent wars between giants such as google and amazon. But the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner? The market context could have been explored more usefully, but this small book remains a very useful source for ideas.

The printing is not up to the standard of the writing

By all accounts, this and Dr. Lee's other two books on manifolds are exceptionally well-written. But my copies arrived from Amazon this week, and, unfortunately, Amazon and Springer have decided to replace the crisp offset-printing of earlier printings by lower quality digitally-printed versions, probably as a cost-cutting measure.

If you care about how books look, I'd suggest trying Amazon marketplace or small retailers elsewhere to increase your odds of getting a superior copy from an earlier printing.

Do Carmo's is better

I've taught an introductory differential geometry course from Lee's book, and in retrospect Do Carmo's "Riemannian Geometry" would have been a better choice. To be fair Lee does masterful job introducing basic concepts from curvature to Jacobi fields, but here are a few things I disliked. The book assumes working knowledge of smooth manifolds and Lie brackets, while many students need review of the former, and know nothing of the latter. Lee doesn't give enough examples beyond constant curvature spaces: there is virtually no mention of warped products, Riemannian submersions, Lie groups, or homogeneous spaces. Exercises are few, unmotivated, and their difficulty is in stark contrast with the easiness of the main text. I feel Do Carmo's book is superior in all respects, and last time I checked it was not much more expensive.

Nice graduate text.

I used this book to teach about half a year of a graduate Riemannian manifolds course. It is a very good introductory text. I wish it has a bit more background on curves and surfaces, but otherwise it was excellent. It doesn't get into a lot of more advanced topics, but the treatment of Jacobi fields and so forth is really good.

About the Author
Hossein Bidgoli, Ph.D., is professor of Management Information Systems at California State University. Dr. Bidgoli helped set up the first PC Lab in the United States and served as its first director. He is the author of 45 textbooks, 27 manuals and more than five dozen technical articles and papers on various aspects of computer applications, information systems and network security, e-commerce and decision support systems published and presented throughout the world. Dr. Bidgoli also serves as the editor-in-chief of THE HANDBOOK OF TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT, THE INTERNET ENCYCLOPEDIA, THE HANDBOOK OF INFORMATION SECURITY, THE HANDBOOK OF COMPUTER NETWORKS, and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS. This is one of the best textbooks that I've used

This is one of the best textbooks that I've used. The author not only shows an incredible knowledge of the subject but also shows an understanding of students and their preferences. Most students don't like their textbooks for different reasons but usually its because they're hard to understand because of a lack of explanations and because the assigned reading chapters are overwhelmingly long. But this book provides great explanations with examples throughout as well as chapters that are short, sweet, and to the point. The book is very well organized and put together and the online support proved extremely helpful.
I would absolutely recommend this text. I am very pleased with this book and what I have learned from it.

Great book, even better online features.

This textbook is the best I have seen for MIS. Chapters are well written so that minimal reading is required to learn a great amount of information. Definitions are explained clearly and completely, and can be understood by anyone remotely familiar with technology.

Questions at the end of chapters combined with online practice questions are extremely useful study tools that enabled good grades in my course. Making flashcards and studying specific topics was easy with the online study bits feature.

With the well explained book and fantastic online features, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone learning MIS.

Raul is worse than Fidel

I read this book after reading "Los Funerales de Castro. Both books worth reading if one has an interest in Cuba and the Brothers Castro. I am not a totally fluent Spanish reader but this book not hard to read if one has a Spanish Dictionary for some key words not understood. "La Pulga Que Cabalgó Al Tigre" also by vincente Botin reads like a mystery novel. (Sadly this is no concocted story) It is the truth about two brothers who have destroyed a nation for personal ambition. I have now lent my copy to many Cubans who tell me that they learned so much about the two brothers that they never knew and certainly was not revealed to them while living in Cuba.

I wish the book would be translated into English so that Americans would have a better understanding of the land, and people and the cruel dictatorship that is present only 90 miles from Florida.

exelente libro escrito con todo el rigor de un periodista que realmente conoce la realidad de cuba lo que vive el pueblo y las verdades que todos concen pero pocos se atreven a decir. tambien recomiendo este libro del mismo autor

excellent book written with all the rigor of a journalist who really knows the reality of Cuba that lives the people and the truths that all knows but few dare to say
